Ha Giang Loop 3 or 4 Days: What the Extra Day Really Adds

planningitinerary

By the Freedom Ha Giang Loop team, local riders and guides from Ha Giang.

Almost every message we get on WhatsApp ends with the same question: should I do the Ha Giang Loop 3 or 4 days? It is a fair question. Both tours ride the same mountains, sleep with local families and cross Ma Pi Leng Pass. The difference is one extra day in the far north, and a slower rhythm on every other day. We ride both versions every week, so here is our honest view of what changes, what stays the same and who each length suits.

The short answer from our guides

If you have the time, the 4-day Loop is the more relaxed way to see the region. If your trip through Vietnam is tight, the 3-day Loop still gives you the big moments: the waterfall swim, bamboo rafting, the Nho Que River, Ma Pi Leng and two homestay nights. Nobody who chooses three days misses the heart of the Loop.

What the fourth day buys you is not one famous viewpoint. It is breathing room. On the 3-day tour the last day is long, because we cover the border viewpoint, the Moon Surface, Tham Ma Pass, Yen Minh, Can Ty, Heaven Gate and Bac Sum Pass in one push. On the 4-day tour that same ground is split over two days, and a new day is added for Lung Cu, Lo Lo Chai and the Lao Xa ancient house.

What the 3-day and 4-day Loops share

The first two days are the same on both tours, and they are the days many guests remember most.

Day one starts on the quiet back road through Ban Cuong and Thuan Hoa. By mid-morning you are swimming under A Boong waterfall. After lunch in Thai An the road climbs into the Duong Thuong and Lung Ho valleys, wide bowls of rice and corn between limestone walls. Along the way you pass small wooden houses with stone walls, chickens in the yard and, in blossom season, pink trees over the rooftops. The night is in Du Gia with a Tay family, in a wooden house on stilts, with a home-cooked dinner and a little rice wine.

Day two is for the water and the big road. From Ngoc Long we drop to the Hangtham Lin River and float it on bamboo rafts poled by local fishermen. After lunch in Sung Trai, the road climbs to the Meo Vac viewpoint and through a bamboo forest. Then comes the view people travel across the world for: the emerald Nho Que River far below and Ma Pi Leng Pass carved into the cliff. We ride it slowly and stop often. That night you sleep with a H'mong family in Dong Van.

Both tours also include the same things: bus pick-up from Hanoi, Sapa, Ninh Binh, Cat Ba, Ha Long or Cao Bang, an extra night in our hostel dorm the day before the Loop, a small group of 6 to 8 people with your own English-speaking guide, the motorbike and fuel, three meals a day, helmet and protective gear, entry tickets and travel insurance. The border permit is not included on either tour.

What the extra day adds on the 4-day Loop

Day three of the 4-day tour heads north instead of turning home. We climb the Lung Cu flag tower, near the northernmost point of Vietnam, and look out over the border hills. From the top you see layers of green ridges and small terraced fields, and on a clear day the sky goes on forever.

After Lung Cu we walk through Lo Lo Chai, a village of the Lo Lo people, and the old stone lanes of Thien Huong. After lunch we visit the century-old Lao Xa ancient house, then ride the hairpins of Tham Ma Pass down to Yen Minh for the night.

Day four is gentle. Viewpoints at Lao Chai and Lao Va Chai, a H'mong village near Can Ty and the hemp weavers of Lung Tam fill the morning. After lunch in Quan Ba we walk into Lung Khuy cave, look at the Twin Mountains from Heaven Gate and take Bac Sum Pass back down to Ha Giang city. You arrive in the late afternoon with time to shower before the night bus.

So the extra day gives you four new places (Lung Cu, Lo Lo Chai, Lao Xa and Lung Khuy cave), a third night in a different setting, and a calmer pace on the way home. Short walks also fit in more easily, like the rocky paths to limestone viewpoints where groups stop to stretch their legs and take photos.

If you want the full stop-by-stop route for each length, our 2, 3 and 4 day itinerary guide lays it out day by day.

Ha Giang Loop 3 or 4 days: who each length suits

When guests ask us about the Ha Giang Loop 3 or 4 days, we usually ask a few questions back.

Choose the 3-day Loop if:

  • Your Vietnam trip has a fixed schedule and every day counts.
  • You are comfortable with one long day in the saddle at the end.
  • You mainly want Ma Pi Leng, the Nho Que River, the waterfall and the homestays.
  • You are riding as a backpacker on a tighter budget.

Choose the 4-day Loop if:

  • This is your first motorbike trip, or your first time on the back of a bike for several days.
  • You like to stop, walk around villages and take your time with photos.
  • You want to stand at Lung Cu and see the far north of the country.
  • You are travelling as a couple, a family or with older friends and prefer shorter riding days.

The honest truth is that riding mountain roads is tiring, even when you sit behind a driver. Hairpins, sun, wind and new food add up. Many guests tell us at the end of the 3-day tour that they wished they had one more day. Very few on the 4-day tour say they wanted less.

Prices for the 3-day and 4-day tours

Here are the current prices from our pricing page. Each tour has three ways to ride.

3 days 2 nights:

  • Easy Rider (seat behind a local driver): $189 (4,850,000 VND)
  • Ride by yourself (licence required): $145 (3,750,000 VND)
  • Seat behind a friend: $119 (3,050,000 VND)

4 days 3 nights:

  • Easy Rider (seat behind a local driver): $229 (5,850,000 VND)
  • Ride by yourself (licence required): $175 (4,550,000 VND)
  • Seat behind a friend: $149 (3,850,000 VND)

The step up from three to four days is small for what you get. It covers a full extra day of guiding, fuel, meals, a night of accommodation and the extra entry tickets.

If you want to ride yourself, bring your International Driving Permit (1968 convention, category A/A1) together with your national licence. Police on the Loop check both. If you do not have one, the Easy Rider option means you sit behind an experienced local driver and need no licence or riding experience.

How to decide in two minutes

Count your free days in the north. Remember that the bus from Hanoi takes most of a day or a night, and that you also need a way back. If you have five or more days for Ha Giang including travel, the 4-day Loop fits comfortably. If you have four or fewer, choose three days and enjoy them fully.

Think about your energy too. If you are arriving after weeks of fast travel, the slower pace of four days can feel like a holiday inside your holiday. If you are fresh and want to move on to Sapa or Ninh Binh quickly, three days works well.

Still unsure? Send us your travel dates on WhatsApp and we will tell you honestly which one fits. You can compare both tours on our tours page, and the UNESCO page on the Dong Van Karst Plateau Geopark gives good background on the landscape you will ride through.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Ha Giang Loop 3 or 4 days better for beginners?

For first-time riders we usually suggest four days. The riding days are shorter and there is more time to rest, which helps a lot on mountain roads.

Do the 3-day and 4-day tours both include Ma Pi Leng Pass?

Yes. Both tours ride Ma Pi Leng Pass and stop above the Nho Que River on day two.

Can I visit Lung Cu flag tower on the 3-day Loop?

Lung Cu is part of the extra day on the 4-day Loop. The 3-day tour goes to the China border viewpoint instead.

Is the dorm night before the Loop included on both tours?

Yes. Every tour includes a curtained bed in our hostel dorm in Ha Giang city the night before you start, plus free luggage storage while you ride.
