What to expect

Waterfalls before the mountains

We start on the back road that most groups skip. Ban Cuong and the Thuan Hoa road are green, quiet and full of river bends, and by mid-morning you are swimming under A Boong waterfall. After lunch in Thai An the road lifts into the Duong Thuong and Lung Ho valleys, wide bowls of rice and corn between limestone walls. The night is spent in Du Gia with a Tay family, in a wooden house on stilts, with a home-cooked dinner and a little rice wine.

Rafting in the morning, Ma Pi Leng in the afternoon

Morning is for the water: from Ngoc Long we drop to the Hangtham Lin River and float it on bamboo rafts poled by local fishermen. Lunch in Sung Trai, then the road climbs to the Meo Vac viewpoint and through a bamboo forest before the big one: the Nho Que River far below and Ma Pi Leng Pass carved into the cliff. We ride it slowly and stop often. Dinner and the night are with a H'mong family in Dong Van.

After lunch we visit the century-old Lao Xa ancient house, then ride the hairpins of Tham Ma Pass down to Yen Minh for the night.

The last day is gentle. Viewpoints at Lao Chai and Lao Va Chai, a H'mong village near Can Ty and the hemp weavers of Lung Tam fill the morning. After lunch in Quan Ba we walk into Lung Khuy cave, photograph the Twin Mountains from Heaven Gate and take Bac Sum Pass back down to Ha Giang city, where the tour ends in the late afternoon with time to shower before the night bus.
